چکیده

Muscle fatigue is a prominent symptom in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). To determine whether it results from an intrinsic abnormality of vasodilating capacity of the vasculature in exercising muscle, we studied local forearm blood flow (FBF) during exercise in 13 patients with severe CHF and in eight normal untrained subjects of similar age. Intermittent forearm static exercise was performed by squeezing a hand dynamometer for 5 seconds, three times per minute, for 5 minutes at 15%, 30%, and 45% of maximum voluntary contraction. FBF

Partition of blood flow to the cutaneous and muscular beds of the forearm at rest and during leg exercise in normal subjects and in patients with heart failure.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relative effects of various levels of exercise on blood flow to skin and muscle of the resting extremity of normal subjects and the manner in which this distribution is modified by congestive heart failure. Blood flow to the skin and muscle of the forearm was determined plethysmographically with the aid of epinephrine iontophoresis at rest and duri...

Abnormalities of the peripheral circulation and respiratory function in patients with severe heart failure.

To investigate the peripheral circulatory and respiratory abnormalities which occur in patients with heart failure, forearm and calf blood flow were measured before and after upright exercise, and respiratory gas exchange was measured during exercise in 26 patients with severe heart failure. Compared with a group of normal subjects the patients had reduced limb blood flow at rest and the respon...

Blood flow dynamics in heart failure.

BACKGROUND Exercise intolerance in heart failure (HF) may be due to inadequate vasodilation, augmented vasoconstriction, and/or altered muscle metabolic responses that lead to fatigue. METHODS AND RESULTS Vascular and metabolic responses to rhythmic forearm exercise were tested in 9 HF patients and 9 control subjects (CTL) during 2 protocols designed to examine the effect of HF on the time co...

Skeletal muscle response to exercise training in congestive heart failure.

To examine the ability of the skeletal muscle of congestive heart failure (CHF) patients to adapt to chronic exercise, five patients performed localized nondominant wrist flexor training for 28 d. Inorganic phosphate (Pi) and phosphocreatine (PCr) were monitored by magnetic resonance spectroscopy in both forearms at rest and during submaximal wrist flexion exercise at 6, 12, 24, and 36 J.min-1 ...
